It is a widely held belief that artists possess a stronger "Spiritual Sensitivity" (Reikan) than the average person. In fact, it could be argued that nearly 99% of truly creative individuals operate on a level of sensitivity that far exceeds the norm. To understand why, we must first look at the brain's functions.
As discussed previously in this blog, "Spiritual Sensitivity" is not merely the ability to see ghosts; it is the power to perceive the "heart" or "mind" in all things—be it other people, high-dimensional beings, or the essence of life itself.
The human brain is divided into the left and right hemispheres. The left brain excels at logic, language, and adaptation to reality. In contrast, the right brain governs rhythm, imagery, intuition, and the perception of the atmosphere—functions deeply tied to the "heart." Since the deepest parts of our subconscious are connected to the spiritual realm, artists—who prioritize inner expression and right-brain activity—naturally develop a heightened sense of spiritual sensitivity. They are often more receptive to spiritual truths than those bound by the rigid logic of the left brain.
The Destiny of the Artist: Innovation Over Conformity
One might assume that high spiritual sensitivity always leads to compassion and social harmony. However, for the artist, it often manifests as a powerful urge to create something that does not yet exist in the physical world.
Artists bear a "destiny" to bring new values and changes from the spiritual realm into reality. This intense drive toward innovation can sometimes lead to a detachment from everyday social norms. Because their focus is so heavily tuned to the "inner heart" or "divine inspiration," they may lack awareness of the mundane emotions or social expectations of people in the physical world.
Historically, we see brilliant creators who produced legendary works but struggled with interpersonal relationships or social scandals. This is not necessarily due to a lack of character, but a byproduct of their intense focus on a reality that exists beyond common sense. They can be stubborn and fiercely protective of their internal values, as their mission is to challenge the existing world, not conform to it.
The Evolving Role of Artists in a New Era
There is a common misunderstanding in society: we expect artists to possess extraordinary, world-changing vision (right-brain power) while simultaneously demanding they adhere strictly to social common sense (left-brain power). This is a fundamental contradiction.
However, we are entering an era where the "Spiritual Rank" (Reikaku)—the capacity for love and consideration for others—is becoming just as important as creative talent. While past artists may have been forgiven for being "difficult geniuses," the modern age, fueled by global connectivity and the internet, increasingly scrutinizes the soul behind the work.
We are seeing a shift. Even among artists and celebrities, there is a growing movement toward raising one's Spiritual Rank—balancing intense creative sensitivity with genuine empathy for others. As we move into an age where heart-centered consciousness becomes the priority, the "ideal artist" may evolve into someone who not only creates beauty but also embodies a high spiritual standard that inspires others to grow.
