Characteristics of Those with Low Spiritual Sensitivity: Why is it the Modern Norm?

Defining "Low Sensitivity" Through the Lens of the Heart

When we speak of someone with "low" or "weak" spiritual sensitivity (reikan), we are essentially describing a state where the ability to feel the heart and soul is less active. In today's world, this is actually the most common state of being.

According to general AI perspectives, those with low sensitivity are often characterized as realists, scientifically minded, or mentally stable individuals who haven't had "unusual" experiences. However, from a deeper spiritual and psychological standpoint, this isn't just about "talent"—it's a reflection of how our brains are trained by society.

1. The Mass Production of "Left-Brain" Dominance

The primary reason many people have low spiritual sensitivity lies in our modern educational and social structures.

  • The Grading System: From a young age, children are judged on test scores, logical reasoning, and the ability to memorize existing data. These are all left-brain functions.

  • The Neglect of the Right Brain: The right brain—which governs intuition, rhythm, imagery, and the "atmosphere" of a situation—is often treated as a secondary "hobby" rather than a vital tool for perceiving reality.

  • The "Knowledge" Trap: When society rewards you only for what you know (existing information) rather than what you feel or create (new inspiration), the connection to the spiritual world naturally weakens. This is why some highly educated individuals struggle to "read the room" or sense the emotional undercurrents of society.

2. The High-Education Paradox: Elites and Intuition

Interestingly, individuals with high academic backgrounds often fall into two extremes regarding spiritual sensitivity.

  • The Rigid Logicalist: Many who excel in traditional systems become so reliant on logic that they lose the ability to perceive anything that cannot be proven numerically. This leads to a "low sensitivity" state where they may propose solutions that are logically sound but emotionally tone-deaf to the public's needs.

  • The Spiritual Seeker: Conversely, some highly intelligent people eventually hit a wall with logic and realize that true growth requires "noticing" things beyond textbooks.

  • True Spirituality vs. Dependency: A person with low sensitivity who suddenly "discovers" spirituality might mistakenly treat it like a school subject—looking for someone to give them answers or power. True spirituality is about the internal growth of one's own heart and making your own discoveries.

3. Learning from the Past: The Era of "Feeling"

In previous generations, spiritual sensitivity was arguably higher across the general population.

  • Direct Connection: Before the internet, people relied more on face-to-face communication, handwritten letters, and music (like the guitar boom) to connect. These activities require sensing the other person's heart, which naturally exercises the right brain.

  • The Legacy of Creators: Think of the global impact of works like Gundam, Doraemon, or Dragon Ball. These were created by individuals with high spiritual sensitivity who could "receive" information and imagery from a deeper source to create something entirely new.

  • The "Genius" vs. The "Prodigy": A prodigy excels at processing existing knowledge (left brain). A genius receives "heavenly" inspiration to create what didn't exist before (right brain).

4. The Path to Balance: Avoiding Extremes

While it is important to revalue our spiritual sensitivity, balance is the ultimate goal.

  • The Danger of Over-Correction: Leaning too far into the right brain without the grounding of the left brain can lead to mental instability or a loss of touch with physical reality.

  • The Future Vision: Spiritual philosophers like Rudolf Steiner predicted an era where, after a period of denying the spiritual, people would begin to accept it again, leading to a massive leap in human civilization.

Summary: Reclaiming Your Sensitivity

If you feel you have "low sensitivity," it is likely because your environment has prioritized logic and existing knowledge over your intuitive heart. You are not "lacking" a skill; you simply have a receptor that has been turned down. By valuing your own unique insights and learning to "feel" the hearts of others, you can begin to balance your left and right brain, moving toward a more complete and inspired way of living. The goal is not to see ghosts, but to perceive the living truth of the world around you.
